The prevailing winds:  Wyndrose Technical Group takes its name from the navigational aid that shows mariners what the prevailing winds are in specific locations.  The wind rose shows the frequency of occurrence of winds in each direction sector (north, northeast, east etc.) and wind speed class (5 knots, ten knots, etc.) for a given location and time period. Homer names four winds – Boreas, Eurus, Notus and Lephyrus – for their source directions, and the biblical prophet Jeremiah (Jer. 49:36) also describes winds as coming from four quarters of heaven. Aristotle suggested a circle of twelve winds, which Eratosthenes reduced to eight. Long before seafaring charts included compass roses, Portolan charts of the Mediterranean were distinguished by sets of rhumb lines intersecting at a common point over which a rose de venti (rose of the winds) was placed. Knowing the expected wind speeds from each direction allowed captains to safely steer their ships and cargos to the intended ports.

Each arm of the wind rose (archaic: wyndrose) has bars to indicate wind speeds – long bars for 10-knot units and small bars for 5-knot units. Flags are used for gale and hurricane force winds; more flags, higher winds. Our logo is a stylized wind rose indicating our commitment to helping our customes and clients navigate the difficult currents and weather of today's fast-paced, globalized business climate.

North winds send hail,
South winds bring rain;
East winds we bewail,
West winds blow amain;
Northeast is too cold,
Southeast not too warm;
Northwest is too bold,
Southwest blows no harm.
